School Playground design

The plan

When my local primary school wanted to explore ideas for developing the outdoor space to provide more challenging and exciting places to play, I was keen to help. Together with the county’s play consultant and a survey of opinion from parents, teachers, governors and of course the pupils we developed some ideas.

Construction plan

With help from an army of volunteer parents, we started the project with a weekend of activity, including repainting and replacing play equipment. New climbing logs were installed, and these timber planters were built (left). I designed them to be practical for children to grow vegetables and flowers, but also with little platforms for playing on, sitting on, and using as tables for gardening activities like sowing seeds.
The Peace Garden
We decided to transform the remains of a Victorian greenhouse into a memorial garden for a much loved teacher Angela Sloan who had recently passed away. The plan was to use the space for meditation and prayer, and the school Eco Council would help look after the plants.

This was the site before, looking a little unloved and derelict.  Lots of coffee kept us going, and helpful Dads too!

Every pupil in the school decorated a ceramic tile with a picture of an angel as a tribute to their teacher, Angela Sloan and the garden was blessed by Father Daniel in a memorial service to her memory.
